Hello everyone. I am writing you on behalf of Piper.
As some of you know, Piper was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes
two days after Christmas 2005, only seven days after turning three years
old. She will be insulin-dependent for the rest of her life. In her short
six years of life she
already has endured over 6,500 fingerpricks and 4,200 insulin injections.
In addition to her rigorous blood testing and insulin shots, everything
she consumes must be weighed and measured, and her blood levels even need
to be checked while she sleeps and plays. Piper is always a trooper and
rarely complains. As most of you know, she is full of smiles, laughs, and
six-year-old mischief, amidst her daily diabetes routine. She even does
her own blood testing while she is at school! Piper continually amazes me
and is a blessing to have in my life as a daily reminder of spirit,
humility, and a positive attitude.
Piper went on an insulin pump in November 2007. It has been such a
blessing. She no longer has to have 4-5 insulin shots a day. She also has
a little more freedom in what and when she eats, however, she still has to
be monitored and checked to make sure her blood sugar is within target
range. She has adjusted well to wearing her pump at all times. She is very
proud of her new, pink pump.
There are many devastating diseases in our world right now, and that
saddens me. The difference with Juvenile Diabetes is that wiping it out of
existence is extremely attainable and within reach. Piper often tells me,
“When I am not diabetic I can have that candy.” It’s so painful to hear
her say that while looking at her beaming and hopeful eyes. I feel
confident a positive answer will be available before she goes to high
school.
Please understand, I am not trying to have a pity party. I truly believe
that out of every difficult time in life, God provides us with something
good. As a parent, its instinct from the moment our kids are born to
protect them from any harm. I feel that I must do everything in my power
to help find a cure for her. It’s my mission to help her avoid the heart
and kidney disease, blindness, amputation, and early death that is a
reality for many people with Juvenile Diabetes.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the #1 non-profit
organization of diabetes research worldwide. One of JDRF’s largest
fundraising events is the “Walk to Cure Diabetes.” For the last 2 years
Piper and I have walked with our own family team – Piper and Jacobs Posse.
We teamed up with another local family friend that was also battling
Juvenile Diabetes. Jacob is a 6 year old little boy who is in 1st grade.
He was diagnosed in June 2006 at the age of 4.
If you are interested, there are three ways you can help us make a
difference for Piper, Jacob, and millions of other children facing
Juvenile Diabetes:
• You can join our Family Team, known as “Piper and Jacob’s Posse,” which
consists of family and friends who collect pledges and walk with us on May
16, 2009 at 9:30 at Warriors Path State Park.
• Send your donation and contact others in your circle of family and
friends to donate as well. Just contact me and we will send you a pledge
form. If you choose to raise donations yourself, you may forward this
letter or write your own.
• You can send our family team a tax-deductible contribution in any
amount, made payable to JDRF. We will deliver any donations in Piper and
Jacob’s honor the morning of the Walk.
You may register to walk with us or make a donation online at:
http://walk.jdrf.org/walker.cfm?id=87292395
Thank you for helping our family team meet our goal of raising $5000.00
this year. Thank you for your support and we would be honored to see you
at the Walk on May 16th!
